Form Factors

Larger, heavier units, sometimes equipped with power transformers and AC power cables, are better suited to desktop machines. A third option for some form factors is "stackable." Drive cases may be placed one atop the other or in a metal rack to conserve space, but not all external drives can be stacked. Those that lack adequate waste heat management may cause drive failures due to heat collection in the stack. Drives that are constructed to be stackable are able to radiate waste heat away from the unit and the stack effectively, thereby reducing or minimizing the risk of disk failure.

A modern, easily portable 1TB external hard drive is typically 3.5" or 2.5" in size. Smaller drives have been manufactured, but they've been discontinued due to the success of flash memory drives.
